Last Updated on Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:35 Written by lyn Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:29
This edition in the Slow Travels series is an update of the original California guide, now combined with Nevada into one guide. Much of the text is edited from the American Guide Series of the 1930’s and 40’s, with updated historical information, improved directions, and additional material from other sources. All historical locations have been verified using GPS coordinates, which are included for all listed sites, as well as from satellite imagery and personal experience.
The California section explores current U.S. Highways 50 and 395, as well as the former routes of U.S. Highways 40, 60, and 99 which are no longer designated as such. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego are explored along these travel routes. Also included is the length of the Central Valley along the old U.S. 99.
The Nevada section follows U.S. Highways 6 and 50 east to west across the state, U.S. Highways 93 and 95 north to south along the eastern and western sides. In addition, the former route of U.S. Highway 40 is retraced along the Humboldt River, the primary route of emigrants along the California Trail from Utah and Idaho to California.
All routes include reference maps and the aforementioned GPS coordinates for all listed sites.
